28 Gates Farm Stay, Tasmania
28 gates is a little piece of Tasmania, only an hours drive from Hobart and nestled in the Derwent Valley / Central Highlands area. The experience of staying in the luxury homestead has been adored by many visitors, due to the freshness of the clean air, the silence of farm living and the serenity of spending quality time with family and good friends. The luxurious and comfortable interior of the homestead mixed with a roaring wood fire in the cooler months or relaxing in the bathtub overlooking the paddocks, ensures a truly memorable getaway. 28 gates is different to other luxury accommodation because we want to welcome your whole family for the experience, no matter how young. Fly Fishing and lure fishing, feeding the placid farm animals, farm activities, playing cards, walks in the wilderness, native wildlife night tours and enjoying local food and wine are activities that can be enjoyed by families, couples or any combination of visitors. Keen to do some Blacksmithing?. We have workshops here and if you have a group of people keen, we can organise a 2 hour session for you.
Another highlight of the farm stay experience is the rich family history dating back to 1862. Many stories of our 5500 acre property can be told and shared throughout your luxury farm stay. We now have museums for you to explore and more recently a Blacksmith Shop with interactive workshops. To learn more about 28 Gates, click here.

Whilst we offer a number of activities here at 28 gates, we are very well known for a strong Fly Fishing culture with three lakes where you can find Wild Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Tiger Trout. To date, the largest fish caught weighed a delightful 10 pounds, with the average weight being around 4 pounds. We have found that a woolly worm or a shrek fly is a winner with these fish and the bonus of fishing at 28 gates is that you do not need a license. Another benefit of indulging in farm stay luxury is you can fish all year round in complete privacy!
Staying on a working farm means a variety of unique experiences are right on your doorstep. Explore the walking tracks, feed the farm animals, go on a property tour , emerge yourself in our working shearing shed or head out on a guided 'native night tour' on dusk to see the native Tasmanian wildlife...a must experience for all ages.
We are also fast becoming a targeted destination for bird watchers. We have over 90 noted species of birds on the property. We are known to have at least 7 of the 12 endemic birds which are only found in Tasmania: Yellow-throated Honeyeater, Yellow Wattlebird, Tasmanian Native Hen, Black Currawong, Green Rosella, Tasmanian Scrub wren, and the Tasmanian Thornbill.
